There are many different rexing genes that have been scientifically described, most of which have similar effects.
- Re - Rex, semi-dominant, causes curly, slightly brittle, coat and whiskers
- re - Wild type, a "no effect" gene.
The Re gene is the one that is the most common in the UK.
This is inherited like standard rex but gives a soft coat with gently curled whiskers.
- Cu - Curly, semi-dominant, causes wavey, soft fur, and slightly wavey whiskers.
- cu - Wild type, a "no effect" gene.
This type of rexing is common in the US and in lines descended from the dumbo lines imported into the UK. It is certainly different to traditional UK rexes but the actual gene causing it has not been identified - Cu is a commonly used symbol for this gene in the fancy. In the UK there is no separate standard for this fur type, and it is thought of as a bad rex.
