There are no common symbols assigned to the roan gene, but it acts as a recessive:
- Ro - Wild type dominant, no spotting
- ro - Roan (recessive), produces white spotting with variable roaning into adulthood when homozygous.
Although the names roan and striped roan are preferred by the NFRS, these varieties are also commonly known as the European husky and European banded husky. The most distinctive effect of this gene is the way it fades, so a black and white kitten becomes pale grey as an adult, to with white with salt and pepper ticking over the shoulders as an old rat. The difference between roan and striped roan seems to be due to modifiers rather than one major gene.
